Description Hurricane 2025 has been discontinued and replaced with the new 2026 version. Warning: this kit is fairly simple, but it is EXTREMELY unforgiving of minor misalignments and build mistakes. Having blade dihedral angles off by as little as 2 degrees can make the model unflyable. If you are not already getting at least 75 seconds from a Tornado, do not even attempt to build this model. Hurricane kits complying with the 2025/2026 Science Olympiad Helicopters are now available. Meets two-rotor bonus and all dimensional requirements. Based on Dr. David Aronstein’s Box Fly, the Hurricane is the ultimate solution for the Science Olympiad Helicopter Division B and C rules. It builds to a rotor diameter of over 17 inches by fitting sideways in the compliance box. Most models build to 4.2-4.9g and can produce flight times of well over 2 minutes even at 5 grams. Our best time so far is 2:55. Includes parts for 2 complete helicopters and Tan Supersport rubber. The rotors utilize special 3D printed hubs which secure the required dihedral and pitch angles. Our 2025/6 check-in box meets the specs for the rules. Hurricane 2025 Build Manual V1.1 Tools/materials required: rubber lubricant, winder, CA glue (or Duco/Ambroid/Sigment), 3M-77 spray adhesive, vaseline, razor blades, sandpaper, ruler, scissors. Don’t forget a Check in Box! Optional: Torque meter, turns counter (volareproducts.com), scale, forceps. Recommended replacement rubber is 1/8″ rubber strip. Basic flying notes: Don’t expect much of a climb until you’ve hit 300-400 turns. Full power is around 800-1000 turns typically. Make sure the rubber is well lubricated with silicone oil and that you are stretching the rubber 4-5 times relaxed length, winding in half of the turns before working your way in.
